aboutimage Food Technology is the application of basic sciences and engineering to study the fundamental physical, chemical and biochemical nature of foods and the principles of food processing. Therefore, food technology deals with the consumption of safe, nutritious and wholesome food. As such, the HNDFT program is broad-based and contain many specialization areas such as food microbiology, food engineering, and food processing and food chemistry. Because food interacts directly with people and their psychology in the choice of food, food technology is associated with the sensory properties of food also.


Food technology is a scientific discipline that has been defined as the application of science and engineering to the production, processing, distribution, preparation, evaluation and utilization of food. It includes the basic sciences of chemistry, biology, economics, agronomics, microbiology and engineering. And this is the study that turns traditional foods into a variety of special and new products and makes them tasty, safe, available and convenient.
Students who follow their higher studies on food technology, have been getting their experience in a variety of scientific principles concerning foods and an appreciation of some of unusual and interesting properties of food products.
But most of students have not a growing tendency to enter to their higher education on food technology due to some misunderstanding among them.


Many young people confuse food technology or food science with food preparation in a restaurant. But it is not. The training and the education of cooks and chefs are entirely different from the experiments and education of food technology. And there is another confusion on nutritionists, dietitians with food scientists. Actually nutritionists and dietitians are determining how much and what kinds of foods and nutrients we should have. But food scientists simply use that information to design food processes to make that needs are met in commercially available foods, including special dietary foods. The other confusion which is highly built in society, is with home economics. This is caused by some course work in food science, food chemistry, experimental foods that offered from many home economics curricula.


Higher National Diploma Program in Food Technology was started in 2012 as a two and half year diploma program which is conducted by Sri Lanka Institute of Advanced Technological Education under Ministry of Higher Education. This diploma program is currently conducted only in Naiwala ATI. The two years of this program entitle students to obtain the Diploma in Food Technology and last six months students are led to implement their vocational training in food industry.
Course entry requires three passes in G. C. E. A/L Examination in biological and physical stream in one sitting and ordinary pass in G. C. E. O/L Examination.
It is a great chance to having selection as a student at SLIATE as it is the only government institute in Sri Lanka that functioning under the Ministry of Higher Education and offering Higher National Diplomas in multi-disciplinary areas in English medium for the G.C.E. (A/L) qualified students. The SLIATE students can also apply for Mahapola Scholarships and have the language cum IT laboratories with multimedia facilities workshop facilities, library, Internet and sports facilities etc. In-plant Training and Industrial visits are also included to curriculum of the diploma program. The program is conducted by well qualified academic and academic support staff.

The objectives of the institute are to,
  • Conduct Higher National Diploma & National Diploma courses and any other technical courses as may be determined by the minister from time to time
  • Plan & co-ordinate technical education
  • Apportioned funds voted by parliament to the Advanced Technological Institute & control expenditure by each such Advanced Technological Institute
  • Maintain academic & training standards in ATI
  • Regulate the admission of students to each ATI
Exercise perform & discharge such powers duties & functions as are conferred or imposed on or assigned to the institute by or under the act


To provide a good knowledge in all aspects of food technology to cater to local and global demands.

To produce knowledgeable, skilled and contended qualification holders with healthy attitudes to face the challenges in the field of food technology with positive thinking, creativity and innovation.

To produce qualification holders equipped with a knowledge in food processing; raw material handling; transportation, storage, packaging and marketing of food products; machinery control and food additives.

To provide practical training to develop the skills relevant to food technology.

To provide a conceptual basis for more advanced studies in the field of food technology.

To contribute to the developments in the field of food technology.
