The food and beverage industry is Sri Lanka’s second largest manufacturing sector with more than 4000 establishment employing over 125,000 people and generating a value of 430 billion even in 2007, the largest sub sector of the food and beverage sector in Sri Lanka are tea and tea products, bakery products and grain mill products. Almost 700 work and technicians / technologists is the food and beverage sector in Sri Lanka.

The bulk of food and beverage processing industry is located in western, central and southern provinces. With the end of war conflicts, there is much opportunity for food and beverage sector:-Northern and eastern provinces, dominating fish and fish products for widening the exported food products to European, USA and middle east market, food and safety management system and regulations have to be introduced and implemented. This will create greater demand for well-trained technical and professional personal of food and beverage industry. The staff shortages are shown production, quality assurance, product development and analysis of food and beverage industry in national and international level.

Accordingly, the importance of food technology science has been widely recognized. In Sri Lanka couple of universities are producing technologists by food science and technology programme .But no regular institute or programme was there in Sri Lanka up to 2010, to produce middle level professionals for food and beverage sector by understanding such long felt need of the country. The SLIATE started the Higher National Diploma in Food Technology in ATI Naiwala. The course outline of the progrramme was design by international and national team of food technologists in 2010.Funded by ADB; EKSP project. The programme was started on 2012 and going on successfully.

This type of web site will enable the professional and technical staff involved in state and privet food and beverage industry to share innovative knowledge and experience to obtain higher level of achievement in their future endeavors leading national development in Sri Lanka.
